How Cat and Dog Acupuncture Works

The acupuncture procedure involves placing very thin needles at areas of the body called meridians, where blood vessels, nerves, and muscles intersect. Because the needles are so fine and small, their placement is virtually painless.

What It Does

The purpose of the acupuncture needles is to:

  • Stimulate the
    nervous system

  • Increase blood
    circulation

  • Trigger the release of pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory substances

These effects work together to help reduce symptoms, including pain, inflammation, and lack of appetite, and promote healing.

What to Anticipate at Your Pet’s First Treatment Session

We recommend acupuncture to our patients based on the type of condition they’re experiencing and how well they respond to treatment. Their first appointment will typically last an hour, and include a physical exam and Chinese medicine exam. During this visit, we learn as much as we can about your pet, their condition, and their medical history. Then, we will schedule a second appointment, where your pet will have their first needling session. This session takes about 30-60 minutes.

Follow-up appointments will generally last about 30 minutes. To determine how well your pet responds to treatment, we will need to see them for at least 6 sessions.
